This speech was thought to be unnecessary at the time. People saw Churchill as being antagonistic and harsh. Most of the world still saw the Soviet Union as the ally it was during World War II. However, due to this speech, the East started perceiving the Soviet Union with more caution and the Soviet Union started to see the rest of the world as an enemy to be guarded against. The Cold War had begun. The Iron Curtain was used to keep people in the Soviet Union and to keep information out.
This Iron Curtain was not just an imaginary border. Many sections of Europe had literal borders and fences that represented the illusionary border set forth by Churchill. These borders were often enforced by gunfire and death for any who dared to enter or leave the Eastern side of this Iron Curtain.

One such border that was infamous around the world was the Berlin Wall. Another infamous border was the border between Austria and Hungary. No matter where the barrier was located, it was always a distance into the eastern side to avoid any border disputes by the western. The Iron Curtain had completely divided Europe by an imaginary border as well as some parts having a physical border.
The Cold War was not to last. The Berlin Wall fell on the historic November 11, 1989 and this was followed quickly by the collapse of various eastern powers. Another historic date was December 25, 1991. The Soviet Union dissolved and replaced by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This was not without its problems though. The Soviet Union has stockpiled nuclear weapons; now, there was no safe place to store these weapons. The Cold War may indeed by over, but we will feel the repercussions of the Cold War for generations to come.
The Iron Curtain fell along with the Cold War. Even the physical boundaries have vanished. Europe is working towards unity and a closer world relationship. It is obvious that the world has been made a better place by the simple curtain that had separated its people - whether that curtain by physical or imaginary.
